Greetings Manic Fans. Some of you know this, others will see this as my latest confession: "I've never seen Dr. Who" ARGHHHH!!!!!!! WHAT! SINNER!!!!! TURN IN YOUR GEEK CARD AT ONCE!!!!!!!..........yep....but have mercy on me. Where I grew up, it wasn't televised(HORROR!) and now I've got......what 48 years of catching up on one of the most important and influential characters in all of Science Fiction? I was cruising the DVD aisle at Fry's today and came to the Dr. Who section.....HOLY HELL! There's like over 80 DVDs and box sets for this show!......and I've no clue where to begin. I'm, therefore going to the experts here who know to ask a simple question: Which Dr/series/season/etc. should I get first? Tell me what would be the best series box set to start on to get to know the good Dr., and why. Thanks for your help, my friends. Peace.

FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry...*sniffle* that was extremely uncalled for...but you...you....FUC...no, no...I must get a hold of myself...you ACTUALLY found a Doctor Who Box set in a store!?!? Ive gone to 6 different stores and haven't found anything Doctor Who related! (other than a model TARDIS, it will be mine). Personally, starting with the 2005 renewal series is a really easy way to begin things(that first series introduces you, and 2nd through 6 are pure gold) Or you could start from the beginning. Pick and choose, pick and choose.

Considering most people have different favorite doctors, it's preferable to go through it all. But I would agree with Fusionater that the new series will make you interested. Watching the new series, you will see a lot of reference to older stuff, and with a short web reasearch you can pin point where this and that arc started.

I'd recommend starting with Season 7 of the classic series. It's the first season to not have any missing episodes, and the introduction of my favorite Doctor, the fantastic Jon Pertwee.

The good thing about Doctor Who is there are multiple jumping in points. I'd say start with season 5 from 2010 with the 11th Doctor, since it pretty much sets everything back to square one and makes it accessible for newbies. Or season 1 from 2005, which is the same. As for old Doctor Who either start wtih the Unearthly Child boxset, the Manquin Mania boxset, or any of the introductory episodes of the Doctor. Most of the time when they have a new Doctor they're introducing it to the new audience. Though you'll probably want to hang around the early Tom Baker stuff since that's when the show really hit its peak. And yes, I do own all the DVDs currently avaliable, I'm that much of a geek

If you have Netflix. The new series is up there. I'd say start with Season 5 just to get up to date, but later do back and watch season 1 and the others.

I just picked up The Complete First Series from 2005, and The Complete Fifth Series from 2010. Expect some Dr. Who blogs sometime in the near future from a Science Fiction veteran taking his first steps into the Whovian Universe. Peace.

Thanks, I'm sure I will. I have faith in the BBC. I already fell in love with their other highly successful science fiction series, Red Dwarf. Dr. Who, predates Star Trek by 3 years, so I'm sure they've gotten really good at making them. Peace.
