In Too Deep: Is Lex Luthor A Bad Guy?

Posted by Ratin8tor on May 10, 2012 at 4:05 PM

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep, where I over-analyze a certain section of pop culture.

Lex Luthor. Superman's most famous nemesis. Countless stories have shown how he's evil and cruel and all that. One of the most famous super-villains ever. But is he really that bad? Or does he justifiable reasons for hating Superman? Well join me as I see whether Lex Luthor actually has a case against the Big Blue Boy Scout.

Lets start off with in-universe reasons about why Lex Luthor hates Superman by examining what Superman is. One of man's greatest triumphs are the Great Pyramids. We don't know how they were built, but they must have taken a lot of time. And taken quite a lot of hard work. Or the Great Wall of China. Take any achievement of man's hard work and determination. Now think about how easy it'd be for Superman to do it. It'd take us years, nay decades to build the Pyramids or the Great Wall. But Superman could do it on an afternoon off. To him building the Great Wall wouldn't be that difficult at all.

And there's the key. Superman ridicules everything we can do. He makes our achievements look worthless in comparison. One of our greatest achievements, flight, is mocked by a man that can do it without effort. No matter what man achieves, we can't ever seem to be able to beat Superman. He'll always be better then us. That's the justification Lex uses. He hates the idea of an alien, nay a God, coming down and over-shadowing man. This is what annoys him the most. He feels that Superman belittles everything that man has every achieved.

But that's why he hates Superman. What about why he seemingly does other evil stuff? Well I will always maintain that the smarter someone is, the more likely they are to be isolated from their peers. But more then that, lets look at Luthor specifically. He was probably the brightest kid in class, getting straight A+. This ends up having two negative consequences. Firstly he'd be bullied relentlessly, because the smart kid always tends to be picked on (probably because smart people tend to be more isolated and quiet then louder, more out-going dumb people). However the other important consequence is how this affects his arrogance. Almost every day he'd get told that he's brilliant, that he's a genius, etc etc. This has a negative effect on one's ego, since it makes him think he's honestly that he's better then everyone else. So combine the arrogance of someone who's told he's better then everyone else with the ability to be better then everyone else and you have a deadly mix.

So where does Superman come into this? Well Superman is someone who is better then Luthor. Not just in might, but in brains too. This frustrates Luthor's ego. He can't stand the idea of being 'second-best' to anyone, since it's the first time in his life that he has to be. And he does the only logical thing in his mind: get rid of the competition. If he gets rid of Superman people would start paying attention to him again and flattering his ego. Superman is not only better then the human race and all it's achievements; but he's better than Luthor. And it's that second one that really drives Luthor to do what he does.

So there's two in-universe reasons to justify why Luthor does what he does. But how about an outside one? One that Luthor won't admit to, but is probably a justifiable reason. Lex Luthor is envious of Superman, in both of terms of powers and admiration. Lex Luthor is greedy enough to want to be as powerful as Superman so he could better rule over the world. Luthor is power-hungry to want it.

But there's another level underneath it. Another, hidden level. Lex Luthor envies how everyone loves Superman. How Superman has so many friends and allies. Even though Superman lost his home planet, he still seems to still beloved on Earth. This is what annoys Luthor more then anything. He wants to be as beloved as Superman, seen as the hero. He comes up with the idea that if Superman hadn't existed he'd have been the hero instead, leading mankind into a golden age. This envy is what drives Luthor to try and destroy Superman, along with other reasons. So, is Lex Luthor a bad guy?

I ultimately say no, Lex Luthor isn't a super-villain. He's just misunderstood. He is a brilliant genius who's been told all his life how great he is, only for Superman to turn up and best him in everything. He wanted to be the hero, but because of Superman stealing the spotlight he's seen as the villain. Superman mocks everything that mankind ever achieved; as if God himself was stealing our thunder. So Lex Luthor's motives for doing what he does can be justified within himself; and at the end of the day that's all he needs.

So there you have it. A quick look at why Lex Luthor is evil. If you disagree with anything, or have anything to add, feel free to leave a comment. Till next time.

When you think about it, Luthor showed he was a criminal long before Superman showed up. In order to get the money to attend MIT, he took out a life insurance policy on his parents, then cut the brakes on their car.

Luthor, like Ozymandias from Watchmen, is a firm believer that the ends justify the means. That any sacrifice is necessary as long as he gets what he wants in the end.

Hi Ratin8tor. Interesting hypothesis, my friend....and Moviefan12?...here's what I've got to say about Superman and Lex Luthor...AHEM!....

Lex Luthor's hatred of Superman is even simpler, I believe: Without Superman, Lex Luthor is unchallenged as the greatest criminal mind of our age-he rules-period. What Superman represents to Luthor is that one obstacle that prevents him from a criminal slam-dunk away from glory and superstardom.....and that just won't stand for an egomaniac like Luthor. He has to be at the top of the Pyramid(that he outsmarted others into building....)

Lacking the physical strength to directly challenge Superman for that superiority, he has to try and outsmart him....which hits a snag, since Superman also has a sharp intellect and isn't easy to fool(Just look at all the times Supes has triumphed over Mr. Mxyztplk LOL!)
This has to be frustrating as hell to Luthor who fancies himself above everyone else as if HE was the God looming over the mere mortals.

So, to the question at hand. Is Lex Luthor an evil bad guy, or is he a misunderstood man who isn't that bad at all?.....Are you serious? I can't even count all the instances he showed a complete disdain for human life in his bids to commit the greatest crimes in history. That's not being misunderstood...that's just plain evil, my friend.

Take the master plot in Superman The Movie, for instance....he arranges to reprogram 2 nuclear missiles to hit targets in America. The first one will hit the San Andreas Fault and plunge 1/2 of California into the Pacific Ocean(killing millions of innocent bystanders) just to increase the value of the worthless desert he bought that would then become waterfront property......that's cold-blooded...but the clincher?....he sent the 2nd missile to Hackensack, New Jersey without a care that Miss Tesmacher's mother lived there....wow! IMO there's no redemption for a villain like Lex Luthor. His motives aren't virtuous. He isn't fighting to protect anyone's interest but his own, and doesn't think twice(or even once) about killing anyone remotely in his way. He has no conscience at all and could be considered a textbook sociopath.

As for Superman mocking human acheivement?....not buying it. Superman's never attempted to erect a monument to his greatness....or break world records to spite our greatest minds or athletes. He uses his powers to protect the innocent from evil. He doesn't do it for accolades or praise. He does it because it's the right thing to do....you know....with great power comes great respon.....well DAMMIT, it's true...even if Spiderman get's that quote LOL!

I look forward to your next article. Peace.

Luther is still a villain. He has a chance to do good with his considerable wealth and intelligence, and though your argument gives us a reason for his actions, it does not excuse them. He could do good, but chooses not to regardless of the man in blue. Good article.

This is perhaps showcased beautifully in not only the weekly epic maxiseries 52 but in Superman: Up Up and Away. During the events of 52, Superman (along with Batman and Wonder Woman) was gone. He had lost his powers after the fight with Superboy Prime on Mogo. He was Clark Kent for an entire year. And what did Lex Luthor do? He waited for Superman to show up again. He didn't work to cure cancer or help other people. Lex Luthor doesn't want to be loved...He wants to be worshiped like a god.

Lex Luthor isn't the type of person who would build the pyramids himself. He would be among the pharaohs, drinking wine from goblets while telling the slave drivers to whip the workers harder just because he could.

Um, gotta disagree. Luthor uses people and treats them like crap. If anyone gets in his way he eliminates them with no regard whatsoever. I am not saying you don't make some great points about why Luthor hates Superman, in fact I agree with a lot of that. But saying he is simply misunderstood doesn't work for me. That's like excusing things Joker does because he's crazy. Your thesis is sound but the conclusion I don't agree with, Luthor is a master criminal and always will be.

Wow, this one is unique and good take but I don't if I agree with you but I'm really looking forward to what Les has to say on this one.
