Sexy VS. Cute: Are we women just one or the other, and what does that mean?

Posted by Kate on August 19, 2012 at 12:55 AM

Don't get your panties in a bunch; I am no prude. I love to wear low-cut tops, and I love men. I also know that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", blah, blah, blah.

I think about most of the women I know, and I think they can be put into the caterogies of "Sexy" or "Cute". Being sexy is stringent, at least I think so; a women must show her large bust, must wear eye and lip makeup, must wear perfume. Being cute? That's much more personality. I have friends that I think most men don't find attractive. I think this is pathetic. Granted, the two that come to mind have very low self esteem.

We desperately need to change the concept of physical attractiveness in this country. I want to start revolution; It is easier to be cute than sexy. Being cute, you don't have to cover your face in crap you can't afford in this shitty economy. Cute flats, a sundress, any variation of the little makeup you want, done.

I think that if some women were to concentrate on just looking adorable--just cuddly, not like a little girl--that EVERY woman could be more attractive. Cute is much more humble and honest.

I am a huge hypocrite. I love the way I look in shorts and a low cut top. But as soon as I get an unwanted cat-call, I feel trashy. This also happens when I am fully covered up, but not as much.

I think most women would rather date a man who thought she looked sweet than hot. Hot can bring a guy to bed, but cute has the power. Cute is why he wants to come back, because she's smart, sweet, and modest. Hot just bursts then fizzles. Hot fades, cute lasts until old age. I'd rather be cute.

Well you could make the counter-argument that sexy is purely a societal thing. For example, in the olden days being fat was sexy cos it implied you weren't starving to death like everyone else. However nowadays sexy has been equated with skinny because of the mass abundance of consumption (and how a 'good' woman will avoid getting fat).

Whereas I think cute has been a more universally accepted thing, since one could make the mysognistic (I think that's the word I want) argument that cute = submissive. A cute girl is one that giggles, acts all shy and quiet like, making jokes and whatnot. However the idea of 'cuteness' can come from the idea that the best ladies back in the day (re: Middle Ages) were the ones that said nothing and obeyed their husband, hence why they were often putting themselves below men. Cute implies a certain level of seperation where women plays weak and innocent to attract the man, since that is what the Alpha Male mentality would have wanted back in the Caveman days.

But again, I'm just an asexual guy that thinks some women are more 'aesthetically beautiful' than others, and that they fit in better with societies norms of what attractiveness is. So take anything I say with a salt shaker's worth of salt.

I agree, but here's the thing with appearance; it depends on the person with the looks, and the beholder only. So as long as the subject does not mask her IQ and is confident, being cute does not necessarily mean "submissive".

I think it is about tastes as I would lean more toward a cute girl than a sexy girl by your own definition. It seems to me that sexy is often trying a little hard and cute comes across as more natural. Natural is the best way to go about it in my opinion. Good article

Hi Kate. I hear what you're saying, and I absolutely agree with you. With the societal "rules" bolstered by advertising and the billion dollar industries of Glam magazines, makeup, plastic surgery etc......Women are under insane pressure to fit in with what the media tells them beautiful, or sexy is....instead of what it really is: a confident woman who holds herself as beautiful or sexy-period. Makeup, designer clothes, botox.....NONE OF THAT TRULY MATTERS. A woman who believes she's beautiful and sexy exudes that beauty or sexiness no matter what she's wearing or has on her face. Beauty really does come from within, and don't let anyone ever tell you differently, my friend. Peace.
