Rating the Batman Films

Posted by TheOtherDude92 on July 4, 2012 at 5:15 PM

This is my ranking of the Batman movies that have come out over time.

Batman and Robin

Do I really need to say anything about this movie that hasnot already been said? This movie is one of the worst movies of all time.  Its way to cheesy for a live action comic bookmovie, the amount of stupidity in this movie is daunting, the acting isterrible, every moment I remember from this movie hurts my brain and the more Italk about it the more this movie pisses me off. I have only seen this movieonce and it still hurts after all these years.

Batman Forever

I consider Batman and Robin as its own entity of suckynessand only a few movies are crappy enough to be lumped into its category of incompetenceand this is one of them. This should not be named Batman Forever, but Batmanand Robin light (even though it came first). Every problem I had with Batmanand Robin are present here, but this movie adds insult to injury for me becauseit has the worst representation of Two-Face I have ever seen. Now I would notcare as much except for the fact that Two-Face is my favorite Batman villainand in this movie they have him as a one dimensional Joker clone who gigglesall the time. I don’t know how Joel Schumacher is still able to make moviebecause from what I have seen he can’t direct anything.

Batman Returns

Yes I know it under popular opinion that this movie isconsidered good, but coming from a hardcore Batman fan, this movie fails in allrights. It doesn’t do a good job at representing Batman because in this movieBatman kills people which he doesn’t do and in one seen lets an innocent personfall to her death when he had enough time to save her. Not only that, but thevillains suck and are poorly handled the worst being the Penguin who is actedand written horribly. Not only that, but threw out the entire movie there isdumb seen after dumb seen and it all adds up to a really disappointing filmthat is a disgrace to Batman.

Batman Mystery of the Batwoman

Out of all the animated Batman movies this is probably theweakest one of the bunch. Sure the animation is top notch, but the story isvery weak and is really boring. It’s sad that the story is bad because thecharacters are good and the action is nice, but the main part of any movie ishow you tell the story and this movie fails at doing so.

Batman the Movie

If you want to know a good representation of an enjoyable cheesyBatman film this is it. It’s a really funny movie with dialog that is perfectlycampy for the time. The villains are well represented for what they were at thetime and are funny to watch when they interact with each other. Last the actionis well done and that’s saying a lot because the fighting in the show wasreally bad, but in a good way. It’s a fun movie that is worth renting if youwant a good time.

Batman

Now this right here is the better Tim Burton film eventhough it’s really flawed. Let’s look at the good parts like Michael Keaton asBatman who while not nearly as good as Christian Bale or Kevin Conroy does agood job with what he has been given.  TheJoker is also well done as will with Jack Nicolson doing a good job showing thecampy side of Joker, but not the scary side; however he is still enjoyable towatch. The two main roles and the style in this movie are what carry the itbecause other than that the supporting cast is just okay, the action is standardfor the time and there are a lot of really dump scenes in the movie one of theworst being the part where Batman locks on to the Joker and misses completelyfor some reason.

Batman Sub-Zero

While live action Batman movies were starting to fall apartthe animated movies were still staying consistently good.  Not much to say about this movie other than it’sjust a movie version of an episode of Batman TAS so it has good writing, amazing acting and good animation everything the animated series was includingits crowning achievement Mister Freeze. It’s a good film that is a niceconclusion to Mister Freeze, until he came back in the New Adventures and thenBatman Beyond.

Batman Year One

People say that the Christopher Nolan Batman movies are toorealistic, I say nay and this is my proof. Year One to me is exactly like theNolan movie because it’s in a more of a real word story then most Batmancomics. It’s also a nice story because it focuses both on Batman and CommissionerGordon cleaning up Gotham. You get great commentary from both sides and howthey view the problems in Gotham. Top it off with great animation and greataction and you have a really good movie.

Batman: Under the Red Hood

This movie is the second best animated movie from the DCanimated franchise. The story is really good and is a nice re-imagining of theoriginal story, but if I explain what they change I will spoil it. Besides thatthey do everything ells right from Batman to the Joker. It also has a really emotional/depressingthat well done. It’s a good movie and should be watched by everybody.

Batman Begins

This is the movie that gave Batman movies a boost of qualityafter one of the worst movies of all time, Batman and Robin. This movie madeBatman awesome again with a good origin story that shows how Batman became abad ass, how he made his lair, how he got his weapons and how he made hiscostume. This was a well needed reboot to the coolest superhero in comic books.

Batman Mask of the Phantasm

The only animated movie on the list and it’s really great. This movie has a lot of things I like about this like it has my favoriteversion of Batman in and also has my secant favorite Joker in the movie aswell. The art style in this movie is really great as well with Bruce Timm artstyle filling the screen. This movie is why I started watching that animatedseries.

The Dark Knight

Yes I know this is very generic to have this movie on thetop of the list, but I just think it’s fitting that this movie is number one.Not only is it the best comic book movie, but it’s one of the best movies ofall time. It has everything like good acting, great action and the best Jokerof all time. There is nothing much I can say other then it’s the best Batmanmovie of all time (until the Dark Knight Rises comes out).

"Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" and "The Dark Knight" are definitely great choices for the top two. I also agree with ranking "Batman: The Movie" above the Schumacher films, at least that camp is more bearable than freaking BAT CREDIT CARD!

Maybe not so much with your ranking of "Returns" while I do agree it wasn't a good film, I do like Danny DeVito as Penguin and Michelle Pfeffer as Catwoman while not picture perfect representations of the characters, the performers make them work. It's the rest of the movie that just feels... weird stylistically and Batman acting even more like a sociopath than in the first film.

Hi TheOtherDude92. I agree with all your points, save one: Joel Schumacher did make one really great film: Falling Down with Michael Douglass, Robert Duval and Barbara Hershey. Check it out if you haven't seen it, my friend. Of course that he proved that he could make a really great film only piles the shame of making Batman and Robin even higher LOL! Peace.

How could you not put Batman the 1966 masterpiece at number 1 :O. There is no scene more tension filled or climatic then Batman bravely trying to get rid of a bomb. And I think we all agree that the Dark Knight would have benefited a great deal from a shark attacking Batman.

Yes I will always think of the Batman movie and TV series as being the most entertaining product ever made because by gosh it's just too funny for words lol

I actually love Batman Returns. It was the first Batman movie I ever saw. Even if I didn't see the first one (which I hope to catch soon), I found The Penguin awesome (even if he was revolting), Catwoman had such charisma for being a thief (and being played by Michelle Pfeiffer helped), and even though I was young, I loved it.

Just like when I was little, I didn't understand why everyone hated Batman and Robin. Sometimes, I still don't know why. Yes. It was bad, but... At least it wasn't like witnessing a car crash :/

Okay yes, it was insulting to the character Batman, but to me it was... Meh? -_-

If I had to pick a worst villain of the Burton / Schmachuar years, it would be Tw-Face. Schwarzennger and Thurman were bad, but Tommy Lee Jones was just insulting.

Yeah, Batman Forever's Two-Face was bad, but the movie's one of my guilty pleasures for some reason. Still, I can see why people wouldn't like it. Good article.

While I have my own opinion on Batman Forever, I will say this much: The depiction of Two-Face is one of the things that really grinds my gears about that movie.
I'm glad you gave MotP and UthRH some love because those are really good movies. (Even if was kind of distracting in Red Hood that the Joker was voiced by Bender from Futurama.)
