In Too Deep Into Disney #19: The Jungle Book, Or Characterisation In Disney.

Posted by Ratin8tor on May 16, 2013 at 9:20 AM Comments comments (5)

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse each Disney film over the course of a year.

Ah The Jungle Book. A book very close to my heart thanks to the strong ties it has to the Scouting community. A very good book as well. And likewise a good film, if you ignore the bastardisation of the characters. But since I'm not going to ignore them, lets look solely at the characters in this film and how they reflect the characterisation found in Disney films.

In Too Deep Into Disney #18: The Sword In The Stone, Or The Nature Of Merlin's Perspective.

Posted by Ratin8tor on May 10, 2013 at 9:15 AM Comments comments (6)

So there you have it. A quick look at The Sword in the Stone and the various bits within. If you disagree with anything, or have anything to add, feel free to leave a comment. Till next time.

But after the duel Merlin leaves Arthur in a rage, causing Arthur to go to London alone. Forgetting a sword he conveniently finds one in a stone, pulling it out and becoming the King of England. But before I go, I just want to make mention of Don Bluth. Why? Because this very much feel...

In Too Deep Into Disney #17: One Hundred and One Dalmatians, Or The Fatality Of Disney Parents.

Posted by Ratin8tor on May 6, 2013 at 5:15 PM Comments comments (4)

Hello and welcome In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse each animated Disney film over the course of the year.

What is about Disney that makes them despise parents so very much. I mean I know Walt Disney loved his parents and bared them no ill will, so it can't be any Freudian reason. It just seems that for some reason Disney takes an active dislike in two parent homes. Why? And does One Hundred and One Dalmatians have any relation to this?

First ...

In Too Deep Into Disney #16: Is Sleeping Beauty A Good Role Model?

Posted by Ratin8tor on May 1, 2013 at 3:55 PM Comments comments (5)

Hello and welcome In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse each animated Disney film over the course of the year.

Blah, blah, low-hanging fruit and all that. But when the complaint that 'oh the Disney Princesses are terrible role models' gets brought up it's often this film that is at the top of their list. But is it the character herself that is at fault, or the fault of the film overall? Can this film be said to have any good characters at all?

We...

In Too Deep Into Disney #15: Lady And The Tramp, Or Class In Disney Films.

Posted by Ratin8tor on April 18, 2013 at 10:05 AM Comments comments (12)

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse each animated Disney film over the course of a year.

Now my blogs this year tend to come in two flavours: The thematic analysis discussing a theme or idea found within the overall movie (those being your 'Why Mickey Mouse Sucks As A Character ' or 'The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad, Or How Faithful Should Adaptations Be)'. Starting with a big theme and narrowing down. Then you have the reverse, where I j...

In Too Deep Into Disney #14: Is Peter Pan A Sociopath?

Posted by Ratin8tor on April 9, 2013 at 11:20 AM Comments comments (6)

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse each animated Disney film over the course of a year.

“...so long as children are gay and innocent and heartless.” As is the last line of Peter Pan the novel. And throughout the novel Peter Pan embodies all three of these qualities. However it's that last word that's the most interesting. Does that make Peter Pan a Sociopath all up? Or is this just a misreading of the word 'Heartless'. Well lets f...

In Too Deep Into Disney #13: What Is Alice In Wonderland Actually About?

Posted by Ratin8tor on April 6, 2013 at 12:25 PM Comments comments (3)

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse each Disney animated feature film over the course of a year.

Believe it or not one of my favourite duo of books is the Alice in Wonderland series by Lewis Carroll. I love the humour and wordplay found within them, since I often employ the same sort of rhetoric when talking to people. But in regards to the movie itself, what is the film actually about? Is it a play on philosophical concepts, mathematical conc...

In Too Deep Into Disney #12: Does Cinderella Sexually Objectify?

Posted by Ratin8tor on March 28, 2013 at 11:35 AM Comments comments (2)

“Cinderella backwards is the story of a woman that gets married and learning her place in the world,” said my nineteen year old sister. Which admittedly got a small chuckle out of me whilst scolding her. But it got me thinking about Cinderella and whether it's a good film. Or does it have glaring flaws that undermine the film itself? Well lets find out.

First off let us define 'sexual objectification'. If you read my blog last week you saw that I was originally ...

In Too Deep Into Disney #11: The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad, Or How Faithful Should Adaptations Be?

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse each Disney animated feature over the course of a year.

And never has a title chosen on a whim been more appropriate. What originally came as an idea I jotted down weeks before seeing the movie actually proves the perfect discussion topic. For whilst we have one story that is probably one of the most faithful adaptations ever made, we have another that is almost completely unrelated to its source material. W...

In Too Deep Into Disney #10: Melody Time, Or How Disney's Past Reflects Its Future.

Posted by Ratin8tor on March 14, 2013 at 10:30 AM Comments comments (3)

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep into Disney, where I over-analyse every Disney animated film over a year.

And this week we're taking a look at Melody Time, otherwise known as '… what?'. Yet another one of those Disney films that has completely and utterly disappeared from the public consciousness. It is quite an unremarkable film that leads very little to be said about it. But perhaps the purpose of this film is to show how far Disney has come as a company whilst ref...

In Too Deep Into Disney #9: Fun and Fancy Free, Or Why Mickey Mouse Sucks As A Character.

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse a certain section of pop culture.

Opening Statement

Fun and Fancy Free is a movie that features two shorts... Both of which are okay, just a bit too minuscule to stand on their own but don't really gel all that well together... In a film that also has odd segments featuring Jimmy Cricket and Live-Action stuff...

Okay we all know that this is just an excuse for me ...

In To Deep Into Disney #8: Make Mine Music, or The Power of Short Fiction.

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse each animated Disney film over the course of a year.

Make Mine Music. Almost the rejected off-spring of Fantasia in many respects. Hell one of the shorts was meant to be for Fantasia. But this isn't so much a look at the film, but more of how successful short fiction tends to be. Am I doing this just to pad out the blog? Well lets find out.

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse each Disney animated film over the course of a year.

And continuing on with our trend of 'obscure Disney movies no one has ever heard of let alone liked' comes The Three Caballeros, a film more well-known for the characters it introduced than for any story (or lack thereof). So can I over-analyse this film? Lets find out.

Well lets start with the set up of this film, the fact that it's Don...

In Too Deep Into Disney #5: Bambi The Futility Of Life.

Posted by Ratin8tor on February 13, 2013 at 1:00 PM Comments comments (8)

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse each- BOOM!

Yes in a spoiler that's now over seven decades old, Bambi's mum dies. It's the big thing of the film. The bit everyone remembers. But is there really more to the film than that? Controversially I'm gonna say no, and have it be that the film isn't as great as people remember it. Why? Because at the end of the day there is a lack of substance to it.

So what little can I glean fro...

In Too Deep Into Disney #4: Dumbo: Corruption of Innocence.

Posted by Ratin8tor on February 4, 2013 at 12:40 AM Comments comments (3)

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse the Disney animated films.

This week we're taking a look at Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Yes one of Disney's shortest and most simplistic movies has both a lot to talk about, but very little substance of to it. At once a complex tale on morality and a harmless kids film. But onto the breakdown.

As mentioned in the title, Dumbo is the story of innocence. And what's more innocent than the idea...

In Too Deep Into Disney #3: Is There An Audience For Fantasia?

Posted by Ratin8tor on January 30, 2013 at 12:00 PM Comments comments (5)

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse the Disney films made over the years.

And where we get to Walt Disney's Magnum Opus: Fantasia. The film that he loved above all else. The film designed to totally change the way films are made. And to put no fine of a word on it... it flopped. It flopped hard. But why did it flop? Was it a case of bad timing, or an audience not appreciating it, or it just being a generally unmarketable idea? Well lets try an...

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep Into Disney, where I over-analyse all the animated Disney films.

Well another week of working away in a fabulous castle has passed, but enough about how awesome working for Disney is. Lets talk about good old Pinocchio instead or, as I prefer to call him: Wooden Jesus.

“Wooden Jesus?” I hear you ask. “What in the name of The Fairy With Turquoise Hair can you mean by that?” Well lets start right back...

Hello and welcome to the Disney version of In Too Deep, where I over-analyse each Disney film over the year.

Because in case you didn't know, I'm working at Disney World for a year. Because I'm awesome. In the Magic Kingdom no less, cleaning tables and whatnot (and before you mock me, I got given my name tag by Mickey Mouse yesterday, ergo I win). But since I'm at Disney for a year, and I have all the Disney films accessible to me (Disney keeps a very well stocked library),...

In Too Deep: What Is New Zealand Popular Culture?

Posted by Ratin8tor on December 31, 2012 at 2:45 PM Comments comments (2)

Hello and welcome to In Too Deep, where I over-analyse a certain section of pop culture.

And speaking of pop culture, the one thing I've never touched on is New Zealand popular culture. Mostly cos up till now I've never really know what to say about it. But with the finale of Jono and Ben at Ten I think I can work out what exactly my popular culture is.

First off, I think I need to explain New Zealand mindsets. We are infamous for having Tall Poppy Syndro...
